Shehbaz expresses gratitude to Wickremesinghe for his kindness and show of support during these trying times.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe called Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday while floods were wreaking havoc across the nation.
The statement claims that Wickremesinghe expressed sympathy for the massive destruction brought on by the recent floods in Pakistan and expressed sympathy to Prime Minister Sharif for the fatalities. He expressed solidarity with the Pakistani government and people, who were said to be resolutely battling the unexpected natural disaster.
PM Shehbaz thanked the president of Sri Lanka for his kindness and show of solidarity during these trying times and informed him of the extensive damage caused by unprecedented rains that led to floods and landslides across Pakistan.
The prime minister emphasised the significant loss of lives, livelihoods, cattle, crops, property, and essential infrastructure that the floods had wrought.
Additionally, he informed President Wickremesinghe of the government's well-coordinated humanitarian response, which included the creation of a relief fund where citizens of Pakistan and other countries could contribute to the flood relief operations. He emphasised the demand for greater international understanding of the floods that have inundated one-third of the nation.
The PM hoped that the "2022 UN Flash Appeal" for the Pakistan flood response, which was launched on August 30, 2022, would help to satisfy the financing needs for relief efforts and facilitate the prompt distribution of aid to people in need. The prime minister again emphasised the crucial significance of the phase of rehabilitation and reconstruction.
PM Shehbaz congratulated President Wickremesinghe on becoming Sri Lanka's new leader.
According to the statement, the two leaders expressed a willingness to further deepen Pakistani and Sri Lankan ties in areas of shared concern.
